Sun protection is perhaps the best thing you can do for your skin. The signs of premature aging, such as wrinkles, dark spots and sagging, are primarily the result of sun exposure, and protecting yourself from harmful rays can go such a long way. Why? UV rays affect skin’s integrity by degrading collagen and elastin, and these two proteins are essential in keeping skin youthful and firm.
With a moisturizer that has SPF, you can fulfill your needs of hydration and protection in one fell swoop. And you don’t have to sacrifice texture or scent – a moisturizer with SPF won’t leave you with that chalky, pasty residue or any unpleasant scent – two things that often turn people off from using sunscreen regularly, much to their detriment.
Common ingredients you’ll see in these products include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral sunscreen ingredients) and avobenzone and octisalate (chemical sunscreen ingrediens). Hydrating ingredients common in these formulas are often hyaluronic acid and panthenol. Below you’ll find some of our picks for the best moisturizers with SPF currently on the market.
Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart SPF 50 This is a mineral moisturizer with SPF (containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that also protects against pollution to strengthen skin and make it even more prepared against pollutants like smoke. Antioxidants in this formula like ferulic acid, green tea and idebenone, which help neutralize free radicals, protect against collagen degradation to keep skin youthful and perky. This formula also has a universal tint to complement all skin types and help even out skin tone for a flawless finish.
Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion This is a great moisturizer with SPF that becomes even more effective when exposed to water, so if you happen to be engaging in water-based activities, you can rest assured this moisturizer will continue working. This is a non-sticky and non-greasy formula that includes hydrating ingredients like glycerin and botanical extracts like strawberry begonia and sophora angustifolia. Glycerin is an emollient that helps skin retain moisture while strawberry begonia and sophora angustifolia act as skin conditioning agents to provide hydration and softness. Sophora angustifolia has also been shown in studies to be effective against hyperpigmentation.

NeoCutis Journee Bio-Restorative Day Cream A combination of hyaluronic acid and powerful antioxidants make this face moisturizer with SPF 30 a great choice. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance that helps plump up wrinkles and fine lines to make them less noticeable to the eye. Antioxidants, including green tea extract and vitamins C and E (which work better together), help fight off free radicals to prevent collagen and elastin degradation. Collagen and elastin are two proteins that keep skin firm and bouncy. Vitamin C can also help reduce the appearance of sun spots that can make skin look dull and uneven.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Sunscreen Milk SPF 60 Featuring a lightweight, non-greasy texture, La Roche-Posay’s Melt-In Sunscreen Milk is highly protective and highly hydrating. With an SPF of 60, it is sure to protect you adequately from UV rays, while a powerful antioxidant complex (that includes vitamin E) scavenges free radicals to ensure no deleterious effects from oxidative stress (an imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals). This is a fast-absorbing moisturizer that is ideal for sensitive skin and will leave skin looking and feeling dewy fresh.
Eve Lom Daily Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen This one doesn’t come cheap, but you may find it’s worth the splurge. Niaicnamide further improves the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fading sun spots or discoloration left from old acne scars. This can help with evening out skin tone for a more radiant complexion. The lactic acid in this formula also gently exfoliates to boost cell turnover and reveal newer, healthier skin cells.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture With SPF35 Sunscreen A drugstore brand, Neutrogena is often at the top of dermatologist’s recommended products. This is a very affordable product that will nonetheless provide protection and hydration in equal measure (avobenzone, octisalate and glycerin are among the top active ingredients). For those with oily skin who are prone to breakouts, this is a godsend, as it provides moisture, protects from sun damage and reduces redness without clogging pores. This drugstore moisturizer with SPF also doesn’t contain drying alcohol to further help reduce moisture loss.

It’s especially great for those suffering from acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation. Another perk is that this formula is extremely lightweight, fast-absorbing and feels quite silky on skin. Active ingredients include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and lactic acid. Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide provide the bulk of the hydration, while lactic acid is gently exfoliating to help refine texture. The lactic acid likely also aids in helping to combat acne.
SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 This is an ultra-sheer mineral moisturizer with SPF. Though it contains mineral ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (which are usually responsible for leaving behind that unwanted white film), it is transparent and goes on silky smooth. Another key ingredient is artemia salina, which is a plankton extract that actually boosts skin’s resistance to UV light and heat-induced stress. Other ingredients include magnesium sulfate (which acts as an inflammatory) and tocopherol (vitamin E) to provide antioxidant protection. This is also paraben-free and non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores).
ColoreScience Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush SPF If you hate reapplying cream-based sunscreen every two hours, you can use a mineral sunscreen brush instead to dust on some SPF throughout the day. Though it’s a powder, it still moisturizes thanks to hyaluronic acid powder that works by drawing moisture into the skin from the environment and from deeper in the dermis. This sunscreen also boasts antioxidant protection thanks to green tea extract, grape seed extract and oak wood extract. Moreover, you can enjoy blue light protection thanks to the iron oxides in this formula. Blue light is the light emitted by our phone screens and computers that also has deleterious effects on skin.
Avene SPF 50+ Mineral Light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion This moisturizer with SPF provides up to eight hours of hydration as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide sun protection. It is great for skin prone to irritation from chemical sunscreens, and has a lovely milky texture that applies easily and absorbs quickly. A key ingredient for moisturization is glycerin, which acts as a humectant to help skin retain moisture, and is often a top ingredient in many moisturizers. Vitamin E, as previously mentioned, acts as an antixodiant. Meanwhile, Avene thermal spring water helps to soothe, calm and soften.

A breakdown of Patrick Bateman’s extensive beauty routine Main image Film stills / via Netflix Text Emma Firth 8220;In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches.8221;
The seriously good-looking serial killer who is very serious about skincare. Written down that looks, um, weird, right? Though very much the case for the searing social satire American Psycho , adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name. Aside from the obvious – a critique of masculinity, commentary on conspicuous consumption in the 1980s, exploring modern man’s lust for power and status -murderous Manhattan businessman Patrick Bateman was obsessive over his vanity regime in the morning. Which comprised of ice-packs, cleansers, almond body scrubs, protective lotion and more.
The opening scene (which you can watch in full below) introduced us to his next-level vanity routine: “I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I’m 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.”
And that’s the edited version. Yes, really. In Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, Bateman’s beauty tell-all is far more exhaustive than the film version (two pages in fact – hair care is two paragraphs alone). Are you ready?
“ I tie a plastic ice pack around my face and commence with the morning’s stretching exercises.”
“Afterwards I stand in front of a chrome and acrylic Washmobile bathroom sink – with soap dish, cup holder, and railings that serve as towel bars, which I bought at Hastings Tile to use while the marble sinks I ordered from Finland are being sanded – and stare at my reflection with the ice pack still on.”
“I pour some Plax antiplaque formula into a stainless-steel tumbler and swish it around my mouth for thirty seconds.”
“Then I squeeze Rembrandt onto a faux- tortoiseshell toothbrush and start brushing my teeth (too hung over to floss properly – but maybe I flossed before bed last night?) and rinse with Listerine.”
“Then I inspect my hands and use a nailbrush.”
“I take the ice-pack mask off and use a deep-pore cleanser lotion”
“Then an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for ten minutes while I check my toenails.”
“Then I use the Probright tooth polisher and next the Interplak tooth polisher (this in addition to the toothbrush) which has a speed of 4200 rpm and reverses direction forty-six times per second; the larger tufts clean between teeth and massage the gums while the short ones scrub the tooth surfaces.”
“I rinse again, with Cepacol. I wash the facial massage off with a spearmint face scrub.”
“In the shower I use first a water-activated gel cleanser, then a honey-almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub.”
“Vidal Sassoon shampoo is especially good at getting rid of the coating of dried perspiration, salts, oils, airborne pollutants and dirt that can weigh down hair and flatten it to the scalp which can make you look older. The conditioner is also good – silicone technology permits conditioning benefits without weighing down the hair which can also make you look older.”
“On weekends or before a date I prefer to use the Greune Natural Revitalizing Shampoo, the conditioner and the Nutrient Complex. These are formulas that contain D-panthenol, a vitamin-B-complex factor; polysorbate 80, a cleansing agent for the scalp; and natural herbs.”
“Over the weekend I plan to go to Bloomingdale’s or Bergdorf’s and on Evelyn’s advice pick up a Foltene European Supplement and Shampoo for thinning hair which contains complex carbohydrates that penetrate the hair shafts for improved strength and shine. Also the Vivagen Hair Enrichment Treatment, a new Redken product that prevents mineral deposits and prolongs the life cycle of hair. Luis Carruthers recommended the Aramis Nutriplexx system, a nutrient complex that helps increase circulation.”
“Once out of the shower and toweled dry I put the Ralph Lauren boxers back on and before applying the Mousse A Raiser, a shaving cream by Pour Hommes, I press a hot towel against my face for two minutes to soften abrasive beard hair.”
“Then I always slather on a moisturizer (to my taste, Clinique) and let it soak in for a minute. You can rinse it off or keep it on and apply a shaving cream over it – preferably with a brush, which softens the beard as it lifts the whiskers – which I’ve found makes removing the hair easier.Leave the sideburns and chin for last, since these whiskers are tougher and need more time to soften. Rinse the razor and shake off any excess water before starting.”
“Afterwards splash cool water on the face to remove any trace of lather. You should use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol. Never use cologne on your face, since the high alcohol content dries your face out and makes you look older. One should use an alcohol-free antibacterial toner with a water-moistened cotton ball to normalize the skin.”
“Applying a moisturizer is the final step. Splash on water before applying an emollient lotion to soften the skin and seal in the moisture.”
“Next apply Gel Appaisant, also made by Pour Hommes, which is an excellent, soothing skin lotion. If the face seems dry and flaky – which makes it look dull and older – use a clarifying lotion that removes flakes and uncovers fine skin (it can also make your tan look darker).”
“Then apply an anti-aging eye balm (Baume Des Yeux) followed by a final moisturizing “protective” lotion.”
“A scalp-programming lotion is used after I towel my hair dry. I also lightly blow-dry the hair to give it body and control (but without stickiness) and then add more of the lotion, shaping it with a Kent natural- bristle brush, and finally slick it back with a wide-tooth comb.” 30 January 2019
Last updated: 30 Jan 2019 How To Take Care of Your Dry Skin By Jordan Carter Published 15:55 pm Best Tips Tor Taking Care Of Dry Skin Dry skin can be much more than just unappealing to look at – it is also uncomfortable, itchy and shows up as red and patchy. We may instinctively think of the skin on our faces when we think of dry skin, but it can occur anywhere, from the arms and legs to the back, ankles and abdomen. Leaving dry skin, particularly during the winter months, can lead to it becoming cracked and hardened on certain parts of the body like hands and feet, which makes it harder to treat. For guys, a skincare regime often looks like a splash of water and aftershave and little more. With a bit of added effort though, your skin could be looking its best in next to no time. It’s worth finding out the right products for your skin type too, such as whether it’s oily, dry or a combination of the two, as using whatever is in the bathroom cabinet could be making your dry skin worse if it’s not well-suited to your skin. Because dry skin is often caused by external factors, it can be treated just as easily with external treatments a lot of the time. These small but easy adjustments to your skin care routine will have it looking soft and supple, with no dry patches in sight. Skip The Hot Baths And Showers A long hot shower at the end of the day might sounds great but hot water dries your skin out faster as it strips the natural oils from the body, resulting in drier and itchier skin. Instead, limit yourself to one warm shower or bath a day and try not to spend too long in there to avoid upsetting the natural balance of oils. Use a moisturizing body wash for men that’s gentler on the skin and is free from scents and harsh cleansers too. The same can be said when you’re choosing a facial cleanser too. Soap has a high pH balance and can quickly strip the oils from the body, skip the soap and choose something softening and soothing. Avoid Overdoing The Exfoliation Exfoliators are fantastic for keeping the skin smooth, wrinkle-free and removing the build-up of dead skin cells. But if you overdo it, you’ll be making it drier, redder and more irritated. Try to limit exfoliating sessions to two or three times a week and don’t forget to moisturize afterwards to keep the skin supple and hydrated. Trying to minimize your routine? A glycolic face wash exfoliates as it cleanses for a two-in-one job that will have the same effect. Moisturize When The Skin Is Damp As soon as you get out of the shower, pat your skin dry with a towel but leave it a little damp. You want to retain as much moisture as you can and scrubbing your skin dry will have an adverse effect. Aim to apply an anti-aging product like face moisturizer within five minutes so that your skin doesn’t dry too much to help lock in as much moisture as possible. You don’t need to pay a fortune for a good moisturizer though – it’s all about the ingredients. Look for ceramides that soothe dry skin and mimic the skin’s ability to hold onto water; glycerine that will draw water into the skin and keep it there; hyaluronic acid that works in a similar way to ceramides, and lanolin which retains water that your body has absorbed while bathing. The delicate eye area is one part of the body that often gets forgotten and can really highlight dry, flaky skin, so choose a good quality eye cream for men to target this facial zone and keep it soft and plumped up. If you’re suffering with dry skin on the rest of your body too, the same effect can be achieved by choosing a moisturizing body lotion that will help trap in the moisture left from washing. Don’t overdo it though – just stick to once or twice a day, or your skin will become oily and look greasy. Drink Plenty Of H2O Water plumps things up and your skin is no exception. Dry skin can often be caused by a lack of hydration so you might not be getting enough if you’re struggling to stay supple. This is especially true if you’re an active person, as it’s likely you’re not replacing the water you’re sweating out at the gym or during busy work days, so be sure to keep topping up your glass throughout the day. You can also include hydrating fruits and veggies into your diet for the same effect too, such as cucumbers, watermelon and berries. Top Up Your Diet With Omega-3s If your diet is lacking in omega-3 fatty acids, it could be showing up on your skin. Omega-3s have been connected with improved heart health and balanced moods, but they’re also great for improving the look of your skin. If you want to up your intake, foods such as salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds are all great sources, or you can add a high-quality supplement into your daily routine to make sure you’re getting a regular dose of healthy fats. Limit Exposure To UV Rays Even on a cloudy day in the middle of winter, UV rays can still penetrate the smog and cause damage to the skin. So, regardless of whether it’s December or the middle of July, we should be wearing SPF to protect our skin from the drying and ageing effects of the sun. Choose an SPF that can be used with your moisturizer or find one that’s integrated to combine the two, and don’t forget about lip balm as your lips can become dry incredibly quickly. Stick To Natural Fabrics There are many different factors that can contribute to dry skin but one area that often gets ignored is the clothes you’re wearing. Certain fabrics can irritate the skin and dry it out, particularly for people who are prone to dry skin, such as wool. Opt for naturally soft fabrics such as cotton which aren’t itchy against your skin. Share
