Winter Skin Survival Tips

Though the calendar doesnt say were into winter just yet, autumns crisp air and chilly nights have given way to frigid air and wind chill here in New England, which means dry skin and cracked hands are looming on my horizon. And since no one wants dry, cracked or flaky skin, Ive come up with some helpful tips on how to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, smooth and flake-free.
Switch to a gentle, creamy facial wash
My current facial wash is Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser, which leaves my skin feeling completely clean and never tight. Its hypoallergenic, soap-free and was developed by dermatologists.
Limit exfoliation with a gentle scrub to once or twice a week
Twice a week, I replace my facial wash with Cetaphil Extra Gentle Daily Scrub. Its hypoallergenic and removes dead skin cells to reveal healthier skin without drying or irritating my skin.
Switch to a creamy facial moisturizer
Im using Neutrogena Deep Moisture Day Cream with Broad Spectrum SPF 20. It deeply moisturizes my skin and relieves dryness without feeling greasy while also protecting my skin against damaging UVA/UVB rays.
Use an anti-aging serum before bedtime
This is the opportune time for it to work. My current favorite is Drunk Elephants TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum. It lifts away dead skin cells, giving me a smoother, more even looking complexion, while improving my fine lines, wrinkles and skin discolorations, without drying my skin.
A change in your foundation might be in order
Powder, pancake, panstick and mineral foundations can make you look older during winter by settling into and accentuating fine lines and wrinkles. Ive shelved my Bare Minerals Original (Powder) Foundation until the spring. Your best cold weather option is the switch to a liquid, mousse or foam foundation, along with using a primer underneath. Im now using Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation.
Use a creamy body lotion or a thicker, richer body butter
My current favorites are from The Body Shop. During the spring and summer, I use their Satsuma Body Sorbet, which is a lovely light, gel-like moisturizer. For autumn and winter, I like their Satsuma Body Butter.
Bath & Body Works Sweet Pea is one of my favorite product lines
Their Moisturizing Body Wash is perfect for the harsh winter months because it has extra moisturizers that keep my skin soft and smelling great. Their Sweet Pea Ultra Shea Body Cream is a bit heavier than the lotion, so it provides me with lasting hydration. BBWs Sweet Pea Super Soft Body Butter is on my Christmas list. Heres hoping Santas listening.
Your body, just like your face, needs exfoliation to remove dead skin cells
Ive added The Body Shops Satsuma Exfoliating Body Polish to my shower routine. Once a week, I replace my (soap-free) Satsuma Shower Gel with its gentle exfoliating foaming gel counterpart, which leaves my skin soft and primed for moisturizing; I also use Bath & Body Works Sweet Pea Foaming Sugar Scrub, which turns into a silky wash that gently exfoliates my skin.
Dont forget your hands
My hands tend to crack, split and become red and sore with the arrival of dry air and cold weather, so hand cream is a must for me. I picked up a multitude of $1.00 Udder Cream tubes at Dollar Tree and have stashed them everywhere, including the bathroom, the bedroom, my handbag and the car. This way, a tube is always within reach.
Ive also switched to a foaming hand soap since I tend to wash my hands more during cold months to help stave off germs, coughs and colds. Bath and Body Works Gentle Foaming Hand Soap is kind to my hands while also cleaning them thoroughly. Their Saltwater Breeze reminds me of nicer weather.
Rubber gloves are another must for me when I wash dishes or do household chores. Repeated dunkings in water, as well as exposure to harsh chemicals, do my hands no favors. I find Playtex gloves the most durable and long lasting. My dishwashing gloves are hot pink and my household chores gloves are a lovely teal.
Pucker up to protect your lips
My lips need hydration no matter the season, so lip balm is essential for me. Chapstick and Crabtree & Evelyn Jojoba Oil Lip Balm are my go-to products. When I want to wear a lip balm with color, I use Maybelline Baby Lips, Cover Girl Jumbo Gloss Balm or Rimmel Lasting Finish Color Rush Intense Color Balmtinted moisturizing lip balms that help soothe my dry lips. Burts Bees also makes 100% natural tinted lip balms that Ive used in the past.

Getting clearer skin naturally is a good starting point when getting into natural beauty. Having clear, even skin will enable you to wear less makeup and feel more comfortable in your own skin. Nothing beats the confidence of waking up and feeling confident that your face already looks good. The following article will give you some more information about skin and how you can get clearer ski nnaturally. Your Face
The skin on our face takes a fair bit of abuse. Exposure to UV, wind, toxins, bacteria from our hands, makeup, creams and dirt can damage and clog the skin. The things that we put in to our bodies has an impact on our complexion as well. The skin plays a large role in eliminating toxins from the body. Excess consumption of processed foods and drinks and a lack of exercise results in more toxins being excreted from your pores, exposing your skin to even more damage. This can prevent some of the skins natural processes from working correctly, resulting in blemishes, red spots, premature aging and more. Image courtesy of Twins Salon
The longer that the skin sustains this damage, the more the damage compounds so the longer you neglect your skin for, the longer the negative impacts will take to reverse. All is not lost however, the human body is a miraculous things and the skin in particular has a great ability to heal if given the chance. Skin cells are constantly renewing so with appropriate care and diet getting clearer skin naturally is a very achievable thing! Keeping Clean
The most important part of getting that smooth skin you are after is to make sure that you keep the skin clean. I cannot stress this enough. If dirt, oil and dead skin cells are allowed to accumulate, the result is clogged and enlarged pores, pimples, blackheads and more.
The pores on your skin excrete an oil called sebum . In its normal amounts sebum helps to moisturize and nourish the skin. Excess sebum, caused by poor diet, hormonal change or toxin build up, results in oily skin. If the path of sebum exiting the pores on to the skin is blocked by anything, it builds up inside the pore. Once the blockage or excess sebum hits the surface of the skin and oxidizes, you get a blackhead. If dirt, dry skin or anything else covers the blackhead and blocks the oxygen exposure, you get a whitehead. These generally cause inflammation and fluid build up which is when you get a pimple. Occasionally these can then get infected and that is what leads to pustules and cysts. Correct cleanliness can stop this process in its tracks, getting you well on your way to clearer skin naturally. Nothing, I repeat, nothing cleans the skin better than exfoliation. The gentle abrasion gets deep into the pores to remove dirt and impurities. Creams and tonics cannot penetrate deep into the skin and scrub away dead skin cells and oil build up in the way that exfoliation can, but what is the best way to exfoliate?
Forget expensive, gimmicky creams that come in plastic bottles the next time you are looking for the perfect exfoliator. The best way to scrub your skin clear is with a bamboo facial brush! You may think this sounds odd as we are supposed to be ever so gentle with the skin on the face, but the fact is that this method is the only way to really cut through the grease and debris on your skin. How To
To exfoliate your face with a bamboo facial brush , all you need to is take the brush into the shower, with you, apply a pure vegetable soap of your choice to your face and gently scrub your face using light, circular motions. Do this for around 2 minutes, you will feel a warming sensation in the skin. Also smooth out from the sides of the cheeks towards the temples and do not forget your neck. Ensure that you brush your neck in an upward motion so as to not promote skin sagging. If done correctly, this will leave your skin super clean and shouldnt irritate at all. Ensure that you rinse all of the soap off thoroughly afterwards.
This method has additional benefits to simply cleaning the skin. The warming feeling that you experience is the circulation in your skin being stimulated. Body brushing activates the endocrine system and assists the body with its natural detox process. This will help the pores on your face to function better as they will be self cleansing more effectively.
Constant removal of dead skin cells combined with the stimulation of circulation in the face assists the skins natural renewal process which will help to prevent dry skin and can slow and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles on your face. Improved facial circulation can also assist in reducing the risk of developing burst capillarie s and other circulation related blemishes on the face. When you scrub your face with a soap, even if that soap is natural and acid in nature, soap still strips the skin of its natural acid mantle . This acid mantle is essential for skin health as it protect the skin from infection. If this mantle is broken down by excessive use of alkaline soaps, cosmetics and creams, it will be more susceptible to breakouts.
To restore the acid mantle after your shower, fill you wash basin with 1 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar and 3 cups of water. Splash this onto your face a few times. Not only will this quick and easy treatment help to restore the natural acid mantle of your skin, it also acts as a great natural toner for your face. Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Additional Cleansing
For an additional skin cleanse, indulge in an extra cleaning treatment once every one to two weeks. A great, natural way is to use a tea. Using warm teas opens the pores right up to enable the natural botanicals and oils to soak right in. This provides a deep level of cleansing that will leave your skin looking as good as new. Different teas are better for different skin types.
To use a tea treatment bring two cups of water to the boil in a clean pot or saucepan. Ensure that you do not use an aluminium pot or plastic kettle to boil your water as toxins from these will leach into the water and tarnish your treatment. Place two tebags into your boiling water and allow the tea to brew for a few minutes.
Take a clean, cotton face cloth and dip it into the tea. Wring out the excess moisture and and then apply the tea to your face. Ensure that you keep the tea hot enough to keep your pores open, but ensure that you do not burn your skin. Test the temperature on your wrist if you are not sure. Hold the hot towel over your face for 15 minutes. Be very careful using any hot treatment on your face if you already have any broken capillaries as heat can exacerbate these. Yes, that is right, the humble black teabag is a powerhouse for your skin. the tannins contained in black tea work as a natural toner, helping to tighten and firm the skin. Moisturising
Thorough cleansing of the skin can rob it of its natural oil balance. If this balance is off, your skin will not perform properly and you will not be able to achieve clearer skin naturally. Even if you have oily skin, it is still very important to ensure that you assist the skin in replenishing its natural oil balance. There are many ways in which you can do this and the method you use should depend on your skin type and any other skin concerns that you may have. Normal Skin
For normal skin, natural plant and nut oils are the perfect way to restore your skin. you can add essential oils or vitamin oils to suit your specific skin type or any concerns that you may have for your skin. Massage the oil into your face after cleansing to reap the benefits. Almond Oil is perfect for the skin Oily Skin
For oily skin, use the same oil as you would for dry skin however, after a few minutes, pat the face thoroughly with a clean cotton face towel to remove the oil. This will prevent excess oil build up. Dry Skin
Dry skin does not absorb oil as well as other skin types. The best way to nourish this type of skin is to use a natural base cream. A vitamin E enriched cream is perfect for this as vitamin E will really help to nourish your dry skin. once the cream settles and dries, you can apply the oil.
